OVERVIEW
Before the detail, here's the challenge you'd help us solve.
We build the embodied intelligence that moves real vehicles safely, and the ecosystem a billion machines will run on in the future. Very few people in AI can say this. Every role here, whatever the team, plugs into that.
Here’s what this particular role covers.
🛠️ ABOUT OUR ENGINEERING TEAMS
Our DevOps team owns two main areas: cloud infrastructure, including Kubernetes, networking, security and the Coder development environment, and build infrastructure across GitHub, Bazel, Buildkite, testing and related developer tooling. The two engineers we’re hiring will be the start of our local DevOps presence in Japan, part of a follow-the-sun support model with our UK and US teams.
🧠 YOUR DAY-TO-DAY
As a Staff Platform Engineer, you’ll help build, operate and improve the cloud platforms, build systems and continuous integration and delivery infrastructure that support Wayve’s software development lifecycle. Working as part of a global team, you’ll create reliable, scalable, secure and efficient environments for software development, testing, deployment and release. As one of the first two DevOps engineers in Japan, you’ll combine hands-on project work with local coverage for Wayve’s global developer-support model during normal Japan working hours.
🧩 WHAT YOU’LL BE WORKING ON:
Building, operating and improving cloud infrastructure, CI/CD pipelines and build systems that support development, testing and production, primarily in Azure.
Developing and maintaining Infrastructure-as-Code (e.g. Terraform and Ansible), automation and developer tooling for reliable, repeatable delivery.
Operating and scaling CI/CD services, including build agents, runners, artifact storage, distributed execution, caching and containerised workloads.
Implementing observability, monitoring system health, and troubleshooting infrastructure, pipeline, build and deployment issues.
Optimising cloud systems for performance, reliability, security and cost efficiency.
Working with engineering teams across Japan, the UK and the US to make sure platforms meet application needs and support scalable software delivery.
Contributing to the DevOps support channel, incident response and root cause analysis, and reducing manual operations through automation.
🙌 YOU SHOULD APPLY IF:
Essential:
Strong troubleshooting, problem-solving, and communication skills.
8 years of experience in DevOps, cloud infrastructure, CI/CD, build engineering, developer infrastructure, or related engineering roles.
Experience with one or more of the following:
At least one cloud platform, such as Azure, AWS, or GCP.
Infrastructure-as-Code tools, such as Terraform and Ansible.
CI/CD platforms such as GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, Jenkins, Buildkite, Azure DevOps, or similar.
Build tooling and concepts including dependency management, caching, incremental builds, and reproducible builds.
Networking, cloud architecture, system reliability, and secure access controls.
Experience with Linux, Git, and shell scripting.
Desirable:
Experience with build systems such as Bazel, Buildkite, or similar.
Experience operating CI/CD infrastructure at scale, including distributed execution, caching, and artifact management.
Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, and container-based build or deployment environments.
Familiarity with monitoring and observability tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, and ELK.
Understanding of software supply-chain security, secure build practices, and cloud security best practices.
Experience supporting large, multi-language codebases or distributed systems.
Experience improving cloud cost efficiency and operational resilience.
🌱 Not ticking every box? That’s totally okay! If you’re passionate about autonomy and keen to learn, we encourage you to apply even if you don’t meet every requirement.
MORE ABOUT WAYVE:
🚀 Wayve is building the leading AI platform for autonomous driving. We are pioneering an end to end AI approach that enables vehicles to learn directly from real world experience, developing the ability to adapt, generalise and improve at scale. Instead of relying on hand coded rules or pre mapped environments, our AI Driver learns to drive by understanding the world around it. The result is technology that navigates complex urban environments with intelligence, precision and natural flow, unlocking meaningful advances in both safety and efficiency. We believe autonomy represents a once in a generation transformation in how people and goods move, comparable to the shift from horses to cars, and from human driven vehicles to intelligent machines.
Our ambition is to make autonomy universal. Wayve’s mapless and hardware agnostic AI platform integrates with global OEM partners, enabling continuous software evolution and unlocking advanced levels of automation from L2 plus through to L4 as our core AI model scales. In a race increasingly defined by intelligence and real world learning, Wayve is taking a distinct approach, building a generalisable driving intelligence that can power any vehicle, anywhere. By combining embodied AI with scalable deployment, we are creating technology that can be shaped to each OEM brand and driver experience, accelerating the transition to a safer, more intelligent future of mobility.

A quick, honest note before you apply.
Wayve is not a mature, fully-structured place with the playbook already written. Much of how we work is still being written, and if you join, you’ll help write it. That suits people who want real ownership more than people who need a settled structure from day one.
If that sounds like the kind of problem you want to spend your time on, we’d really like to hear from you.
